In a report published by The Guardian Online on 29th May, Manchester United Winger, Amad Diallo is reported to have been seen on social media making an obscene gesture to fans outside the team’s hotel in Kuala Lumpur. He claimed his actions were in response to fans who had insulted his mother.
The club said that Amad had responded to supporters with an obscene gesture after being subject to "serious personal abuse.”
"I have respect for people but not for the one who insults my mum," Amad wrote on X.
"I shouldn't have reacted like that, but I don't regret what I did."
Amad's statement reflects a deeply personal and emotional reaction to insults directed at his mother. By explicitly addressing the abuse, he demonstrates a sense of vulnerability and a strong familial bond.
In both sentences, we note his inclusion of the word, ‘but’ which can mean ‘Beware the Underlying Truth,’ meaning that which follows the word, ‘but’ is more important than that which precedes it.
His initial response—admitting to an inappropriate reaction—acknowledges a lapse in judgment while simultaneously defending the motivations behind his actions. While Amad concedes that his reaction was not ideal, his declaration of “not regretting” it shows a mix of accountability and defiance. He is seeking to resonate with and gain empathy from the reader.
By using the word ‘that’ he seeks to create some distance between himself and his actions. The gesture could equally have reflected his match rating.
