On Monday 26th May, a video published on the Sky News website showed Emmanuel Macron, President of France, being pushed in the face by his wife as they prepared to exit the plane after touching down in Vietnam.

In response to suggestions that the pair were arguing, Macron said, ‘I haven't got lots of time to spare and yet, I'm spending a lot of time explaining the interpretation of these types of videos’.

There should be nothing to interpret other than to tell the truth and to deny what did not happen.

He added, ‘It's been three weeks, from Kyiv to Tirana, and now Hanoi, there are people who have watched videos and believe that I've shared a packet of cocaine, had a head-to-head with the Turkish President, and now that I'm having a domestic with my wife. None of these things are true - however the videos are real’.

The reason for President Macron speaking is to address suggestions that he and his wife were arguing. If they weren’t, the expected is for him to simply say so. Macron’s priority is to speak to time and deflect, which can seek to minimise the effect of the issue at hand.

Macron references the other events in the past tense before adding, ‘I’m having a domestic with my wife’. This is said in the present tense about an alleged past tense event. This is often indicative of deception. He is unable to deny that they were having an argument and does admit that the videos are real. Given that they are real, why not say what did happen if it was not an argument?

Macron finished by insisting everyone needed to ‘calm down’ and ‘interest themselves in current affairs’ instead.

Three weeks can be a long time. Given the circumstances and what has been said and seen, Macron is likely right that everyone needs to ‘calm down’.
