Last Saturday night, the current series of Doctor Who came to an end with the Doctor’s character, played by Ncuti Gatwa, regenerating. The face which appeared post-regeneration was that of Rose, the Doctor’s original companion in 2005 when the show returned to TV for the first time since the 1990s.
This prompted both conclusions and questions as to whether Billie Piper will be the next Doctor Who?
For insight, we can review the closing credits. At the end of the show, they read:
- Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor
- Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor
- And Introducing Billie Piper.
This does not assign the role of the Doctor to Billie Piper. It only ‘introduces’ her in some capacity.
If it doesn’t say she is, ‘The Doctor’ then we can’t conclude this to be the case.
In each of the six previous regenerations since Dr Who returned, the closing credits have acknowledged the departing actor as ‘The Doctor’ and introduced the incoming actor as, ‘The Doctor’. The only minor difference being the first regeneration when Christopher Eccleston regenerated into David Tennant’s Doctor. Christopher Eccleston was referred to as ‘Doctor Who’ whilst Tenant was introduced as ‘Doctor Who’.
Subsequently, each incoming actor is introduced by their title. As Billie Piper isn’t given a title, we cannot say she is taking on the role of the Doctor. Whilst this could change in the future, for now, it appears there is a glitch in the space-time continuum.
Allons-y!
