The Language of Deception: How Words Can Break Us by Ayleen Charlotte

How is it possible that we fall in love through words? That a few carefully chosen sentences can make us feel pressure, trust, fear—or even hand over all our money? The linguistic power behind online scams has always fascinated me.

As the founder of S.A.F.E. by Ayleen Charlotte, I work to shed light on exactly this. S.A.F.E.—which stands for Scam Awareness & Fraud Education—is a specialist training programme designed for corporates, banks, and frontline responders. Delivered face to face over a full day, the programme equips professionals with deep psychological insights, trauma-informed communication techniques, and practical tools to better support victims of fraud.

A key element of the training is helping professionals understand how victims become entangled—and how they can be guided to "break the spell" of manipulation.

In collaboration with DDL, I’m launching a new blog series that dives into the actual language scammers use. Each post will analyse specific phrases and manipulative sentence patterns commonly seen in online fraud.

Drawing from real-life examples—including messages I personally received during my nearly two-year-long scam experience with The Tinder Swindler - I’ll show how words alone can deceive, seduce, and control.

By dissecting these words, we can better protect ourselves—and those around us.

Sunil Chadda, CEO of Deception Detection Lab, commented:

“We have been engaging with Ayleen for a few months and have been touched by her openness, honesty and willingness to help others avoid the same Romance Fraud fate.

Deception Detection Lab and Ayleen will be publishing periodic blogs which highlight the linguistic elements used by Romance Fraud scammers to draw in their victims.

We are honoured to be working with Ayleen and are exploring other avenues of collaboration with her”.
