Appearing on BBC Sunday recently with Laura Kuenssberg, the UK's choice for the next ambassador to the US, Lord Peter Mandelson, described his previous criticism of Donald Trump as "ill-judged and wrong".
In an interview with an Italian journalist in 2019, he described Trump as "reckless and a danger to the world".
This followed a 2018 interview with the Evening Standard where he described Trump as "a bully".
But Mandelson told Fox News, external: "I made those remarks six years ago in 2019, led rather along this by an Italian journalist... it was a time in Britain by the way with very fraught politics and there was high emotion about many things in Britain at that time.”
"I consider my remarks about President Trump as ill-judged and wrong.”
"And I think that time and attitudes towards the President has changed since then."
Lord Peter Mandelson has been vociferous in his previous criticism of President Donald Trump. This changes following his appointment to the role as Ambassador to the US.
He says, ‘I consider my remarks about President Trump all ill-judged and wrong.’ He has had to think carefully before making this statement. Better to say, ‘My remarks about President Trump were ill-judged and wrong.’
He has a need to caveat and minimise his previous comments laying the blame on an Italian journalist, fraught politics and high emotion in Britain.
These are the reasons he provides for ‘considering’ his prior remarks as being wrong yet is uncertain as to whether ‘time and attitudes’ have changed.
He only ‘thinks’ that ‘time and attitudes towards the President has changed since then.’ This lacks certainty. This being the case, should he perceive if the same were to change again, his current stance may change? Why base his opinion on a collective attitude towards the President? Might he consider something different?
Has Mandelson played his Trump Card?
